No app can reliably map "dangerous neighborhoods" block-by-block — always confirm with your hotel reception or a local. Samir gives you the fastest lookups:

🕵️ Verify your travel agent, guide or hotel

Before you pay anyone — check them. Enter an agency, tour guide or hotel name and Samir pulls up their photos, star rating, reviews and any complaints in one tap. If they have no online footprint at all — that's a red flag.

🇵🇰 Booking Umrah/Hajj from Pakistan? Only pay operators licensed by the Ministry of Religious Affairs — ask for their enrollment number and verify it before paying.

📶 Internet for your trip (eSIM)

Skip airport SIM queues and roaming bills — install a digital SIM before you fly and land with data already working. Samir needs internet to translate, so this is step one of any trip.

Light user (recommended): 3GB/30-day MENA eSIM ≈ $8 — enough for translation, maps & WhatsApp texts if you prep offline (see plan below).
Heavy user, travel eSIM: big bundles get near $1/GB — e.g. ~10GB ≈ $10, ~20GB ≈ $20, ~50GB ≈ $33 (compare on the links above; prices change often).
Heavy user, cheapest of ALL: buy a local visitor SIM in the city (passport needed): Zain ≈ SAR 140 for 100GB/28 days (~$0.37/GB) — but avoid airport kiosks and note internet calls can be limited on local SIMs.

Every operator has official visitor packages (passport + visa needed, fingerprint may be requested at registration):

Where to buy: skip the airport queues — official stores in malls are faster and staff often speak Urdu/Hindi. Zain also runs special Hajj & Umrah visitor offers with free family-calling minutes — ask at the counter.

🛎 Samir's 10-minute local SIM recipe

⚠ By Saudi law a local SIM must be registered in person with your original passport — it cannot be activated from Pakistan or left at your hotel. But Samir makes it feel pre-arranged:
1. Before flying: install a small travel eSIM (top of this tab) so you land connected.
2. After hotel check-in: open 🧭 Explore → 📱 SIM shops — Samir finds the phone shops nearest your hotel.
3. Bring your original passport + visa, go to an official operator store, and show this:

Tap a phrase → it fills the screen to show the shopkeeper (and 🔊 speaks it). Registration takes ~10–20 minutes and the SIM works immediately.

✅ Does my phone support eSIM?

Dial *#06# on your phone — if you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM. Most phones from 2019 onward do: iPhone XS/XR and newer, Samsung S20/Note 20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer. Important: phones bought on installments may be carrier-locked — ask your carrier to unlock before travelling.

🛠 How to set it up (3 steps)

1. Buy a plan for your destination (links above) while you still have internet at home.
2. Scan the QR code they email you: Settings → Cellular/Connections → Add eSIM.
3. On landing: turn the eSIM line ON, enable data roaming for the eSIM line only, keep your home SIM active for calls/WhatsApp verification.

💡 Traveler tips

• Going to several countries? Regional packs (Middle East, Europe, Asia) are cheaper than buying per country.
• For Umrah/Hajj: install the eSIM in Pakistan before departure — data at Jeddah airport kiosks costs 3–5× more.
• 1GB is enough for ~1 week of maps + translation + WhatsApp texts (avoid video streaming).
• WhatsApp calls in Saudi: on travel eSIMs, WhatsApp/FaceTime calls usually work (data routes internationally), while local SIMs may still block internet calls. Install BOTIM (officially licensed) as a backup for calling family — and keep your home SIM active for SMS codes.
